How To Maintain Your Washer And Dryer

February 16, 2023 Published by Leave your thoughts

Your laundry duo is one of the most used appliances in your home, so it’s important to take good care of them. There are a number of ways that you can keep your washer and dryer in top shape. And luckily, the following maintenance tips are easy and relatively cost-free.

Clean The Lint Trap

While it may seem like a simple task, cleaning the lint trap on your washer and dryer can make a world of difference in how they work. In addition to preventing fires, it also makes your machine run more efficiently and clean your clothes better. Some lint traps are removable, but you should still clean them at least twice a year to ensure they remain free of lint buildup. To do so, simply soak your lint trap in hot water, if it’s a removable one, or use a sponge and detergent to remove any accumulated gunk.

Inspect The Water Hoses

Washing machine hoses are one of the most important things to check on your washer and dryer. They connect your top or front load washing machine to the water valve that supplies water to each wash cycle. Most hoses are made of rubber, vinyl, or polyurethane. These materials vary in kink resistance and burst strength, as well as flexibility and diameter. Inspect the hoses for crimps or kinks that might lead to a leak. Next, drain the hoses and clean out any dirt or debris. Once you’ve cleaned them, replace them with new hoses. Make sure to turn the hoses’ fittings clockwise before using pliers to tighten.

Clean The Exhaust Ducts

Your washer and dryer work best when their exhaust ducts are clean. If they’re clogged with lint, it not only takes more time for clothes to dry, but also increases your energy costs and raises your fire risk. In the back of most dryer units, you’ll find a short 4-inch diameter exhaust pipe. It connects to dedicated ductwork inside your wall through an aluminum elbow or other pipe. The hot air from your dryer will then travel along this metal ductwork until it emerges through an opening on the outside wall of your home. Once your vent is located, remove the exterior cover to gain access to it. You can then use a vacuum with a crevice attachment to clean the duct from both ends.

Clean The Drum

Washer and dryer drums are frequently exposed to greasy stains and residue. From ink left by a pen that’s accidentally exploded in a jeans pocket to lip balm that melts and leaves spots on khaki pants or a greasy waxy stain from a melted ChapStick, stains are all common laundry mishaps. When these stains are detected, they need to be dealt with quickly. This can mean washing and drying clothes with rubbing alcohol, which will remove any traces of ink or other stains without damaging the appliance’s finish. After a few applications, wipe away with a clean rag. If the drum is especially grimy, you can also use a scrub brush to remove stubborn stains. Once you’re done, rinse the appliance with water. Then, you can reapply a fresh coat of cleaner.

Replace The Filters

When a washing machine filter becomes clogged with lint, it may cause your washer to run less efficiently. A washer filter plug is a small, toothed plastic ring that sits in the bottom of the washer’s spin basket. These parts wear out with regular use, so if your clothes come out of the washer covered in lint or looking less clean than they should, it’s time to replace these plugs. Dirty filters can also prevent your washer from draining as quickly, causing it to overheat and burn the motor pump. For these reasons, it is best to replace your washer and dryer filters regularly.
