How to Clean Your Dishwasher

When the inside of your dishwasher starts to look a little grimy and smells off, it’s time for a deep cleaning. This simple process helps prevent a build-up of germs and keeps your appliance running smoothly.

Clean The Door

The door of a dishwasher attracts fingerprints and food residue, which builds up over time. It can also collect soap scum and grime that can affect the performance of your dishwasher, as well as make it smell unpleasant. Cleaning the door doesn’t take much effort, and it can help keep your dishwasher looking shiny and running like new. Start by mixing 1/4 cup baking soda with 1 quart of water and use a shammy towel or paper towel to scrub the outside and inside of the door. Next, clean the seal around the dishwasher door with a damp cloth dipped in a vinegar and water solution. If needed, get into the tiny, tighter areas with a toothbrush dipped in the same cleaning solution.

Clean The Racks

A dishwasher rack is a crucial part of any home kitchen, as it allows dishes to be washed properly and efficiently. Depending on your dishwasher model, racks are typically made from either composite plastic or stainless steel. Metal options are more prone to rusting than composite or plastic ones so you’ll have to clean them regularly to prevent them from corroding.

Clean The Spray Arms

Dishwasher spray arms provide water to wash your dishes, and they can become clogged with food particles or mold. They can also be in the way of other parts that you need to remove, so cleaning them is a good idea. You can clean the spray arms with an old toothbrush or vinegar. Vinegar softens mineral deposits that build up inside the jet holes. After rinsing out the spray arms with a hot water rinse, you can use a flexible brush to scrub them clean. Cotton swabs or thumbtacks are also helpful for getting dirt out from the holes.

Clean The Gasket

The gasket on your dishwasher forms a seal when it’s closed, preventing water from leaking out during a cycle. However, over time it can get clogged with debris and food that gets stuck in the edges. Clean the gasket of your dishwasher regularly to prevent leaks and save money on repairs. You can do this easily by wiping it down with a clean rag and soap.
