My Dishwasher Smells – What Do I Do?

November 21, 2022 Published by Leave your thoughts

Why does my dishwasher smell? There could be many reasons, such as leftover food residue inside the dishwasher, a clogged drain, a clogged or dirty filter, or the presence of mold on the gasket seal. Once you have properly identified the actual cause of your smelly dishwasher, it is important to know how to get rid of the smell. The good news is that you can easily eliminate the smell with just some simple solutions.

How To Get Rid of a Smelly Dishwasher

Cleaning a smelly dishwasher doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are some simple steps you can take to properly deodorize your dishwasher. Before you begin, you are going to need the following:

  • Dish washing liquid
  • White vinegar
  • Sponge
  • Towel
  • Bowl
  • Soft-bristled brush

Begin by emptying the dishwasher. This means you should clear out the dishwasher of any lingering dishes, including glassware and utensils. This will give you easy access to the inside of your dishwasher.

Next, you should take the filter out of the dishwasher and clean it. You can remove the filter by pulling out the bottom portion of your dish rack. But, if you are not sure how to remove the filter, you may want to read the manual for your dishwasher’s model. Once you have removed the filter, you should empty it out and eliminate any remaining debris from the inside by soaking it in soap and water. If, after soaking the filter, you still notice remaining debris, you can use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the filter. Once it has been cleaned you can put the filter back in your dishwasher.

Now you can focus your attention on cleaning the inside of your dishwasher using 2 cups of white vinegar and a bowl. You can place this bowl on the bottom of your dishwasher. Choose a cycle that features an option for air-dry, and you can start the dishwasher. This process will help to eliminate odors in the dishwasher using vinegar. Once this cycle is complete, you can then continue using your dishwasher as you regularly do.

Don’t forget to end this cleaning process by making sure the gasket seals are cleaned. If you don’t properly maintain the gasket seals, mildew and mold can grow which can cause a foul odor. You can simply use soap, water and a sponge to get rid of any debris on the gasket seals.

If you still notice a smell after cleaning your dishwasher, it may be due to a drain hose clog. This is an issue that should only be handled by a professional technician. In this case, you should call to have a repair scheduled at your earliest convenience.

Preventing Unwanted Smells

There are simple tips you can follow to prevent your dishwasher from smelling. For example, you should clean the filter once a month to avoid the accumulation of food debris. Never overload your dishwasher to enable the flow of soap and water through the dishes. Finally, consider using dishwasher cleaners on a monthly basis to prevent odors from forming in the first place.
